The Mojave Expanse: Vast Deserts & Hidden Wonders

Cross into one of North America’s most striking desert landscapes. From surreal Joshua tree forests to booming sand dunes and dark night skies, here are the top experiences in the Mojave.

1. Listen to the Kelso Dunes

Hike up these massive 600-foot sand dunes to experience the famous “singing” or “booming” phenomenon—a low booming sound produced when thousands of sand grains slide down the slopes together.

2. Wander through dense Joshua Tree forests

Drive along Cima Road within Mojave National Preserve to witness one of the densest and largest stands of Yucca brevifolia (Joshua trees) in the entire American Southwest.

3. Descend into the Hole-in-the-Wall lava rings

Hike through narrow volcanic rock canyons sculpted by ancient eruption chambers. Use embedded metal rings bolted into the canyon walls to climb through the most rugged passages.

4. Visit the historic Kelso Depot

Step inside a beautifully restored 1924 Spanish-style railroad depot that once served Union Pacific trains. It now houses interactive desert exhibits and historical displays.

5. Experience world-class night sky stargazing

Far away from city light pollution, the Mojave Expanse offers some of the clearest dark skies in California. Pull over at night to view the brilliant arch of the Milky Way and seasonal meteor showers.
